GALLERY & REVIEW | mxmtoon & Katherine Li by Nicole Frunza

mxmtoon visited the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., once again on April 4th, 2025. This time, it was for her "Liminal Space" tour, which coincided with the release of her newest album.

Katherine Li opened up the show with a lot of excitement that brought the crowd to sing and dance along with her. You could tell that the crowd enjoyed her as an opener. Katherine was very bubbly and cheerful, I was happy to view her performance.

mxmtoon put on a lovely show (no surprise here). If you don't know, mxmtoon is a part-time singer and part-time comedian. She makes the crowd laugh in between songs and has a plethora of jokes and bits to spare.

My favorite moment of the evening was when Maia (mxmtoon) described her process for creating her most recent album, Liminal Space. She mentioned that she only wanted to work with women and also women who have had similar experiences as her for this project. She sang an emotional song and even shed a few tears at the end, but she wasn't alone. It was an emotional moment for many in the audience as well.

Maia creates such a safe space at her shows. Her talent and comedy are always apparent in any room she's in. If you have the chance to catch mxmtoon on this Liminal Space tour run, I definitely would!
