Welcome back to another edition of "1 Band - 2 Photos - 3 Questions"! In this installment, we reconnect with Suzan Köcher’s Suprafon as they release their third album and gear up for their autumn tour across Germany. With their signature blend of psychedelic dream pop, Suzan Köcher’s Suprafon creates music perfect for those who savor quiet, nostalgic moments and the magic of the in-between seasons. Dive in and discover more about their world!

Keep reading & listen to "Sleepless Strangers" if that is you:

You're likely someone who finds comfort in the cooler seasons, savoring the warmth of a campfire or the nostalgia of a classic French film. You cherish the sound of rain and have a tendency to get lost in daydreams and forest walks. Flea markets spark your excitement, not just for their treasures but because you're an old soul with a keen eye for cinematic beauty. There’s a part of you that wishes you’d been born in the '50s to experience all the phases of The Beatles firsthand. You’re someone who finds solace in slipping on your headphones and letting music transport you, perhaps while watching the world go by from the window of a (hopefully punctual) train. And, if I had to guess, you probably have a soft spot for a good Pasta al Limone.

1 Band

Hi we’re Suzan Köcher‘s Suprafon - a psychedelic dream pop band and we’re going to release our third album on October 11. Of course we’re also going on tour, hope to see you there :)

This photo was taken in August 2023 by my good friend and fellow musician, Nadia Wardi. I love the vibe of this picture; it resonates deeply with our music. There's a blend of melancholy, darkness, mystery, and magic, but also a warm, campfire-like comfort that’s hard to put into words. We shot these photos in a nature reserve in our hometown, Solingen. Normally, mosquitoes prefer me to others, but this time was extreme — I counted 72 bites on my legs alone. It sounds like a joke, but they truly ate me alive.

I haven’t found any information about the photographer, but this photo was taken at this year's Open Air Folkfestspiele in Duisburg on May 25. I remember feeling completely free on stage, and the audience was incredibly welcoming. I don't usually strike poses like this during performances, but I was so immersed in the music that it just happened naturally — I must have been in some kind of ecstasy. Funny enough, when we were being introduced on stage, I was still changing into my outfit and couldn’t find my boots. I had to rush to get ready, but everything came together perfectly. We had such a great time.

3 Questions

HOW DO YOU APPROACH PHOTO SHOOTS AND DO YOU ENJOY THE PROCESS?

The last photoshoot was the first time I had everything really well planned. We had a mood board, fittings beforehand, I kept an eye on the weather and the sunset timing, and we shot in three different locations. I was so lucky to have my friend Nadia as the photographer — she has an amazing eye and knows really cool tricks for different photo styles. But it’s not always this organized. Sometimes, when we’re shooting a music video or have a show, we just ask someone to quickly snap a photo for social media. And honestly, those often turn out to be some of the best shots. So, I really appreciate both approaches.

WHAT CAN PHOTOGRAPHERS EXPECT WHEN THEY ACCOMPANY YOU BACKSTAGE AT A GIG OR ON TOUR?

I warm up my voice and stretch a bit, but beyond that, each gig is different. I tend to keep to myself before the show, focusing on calming my nerves and concentrating on the performance. On the other hand, our guitarist, Julian, enjoys mingling with the crowd, catching up with friends, or even go to the merch table. Right before we go on stage, we huddle up like a football team, wishing each other good luck. After the show, I finally get to eat dinner since I can’t do it beforehand. Then we hang out, chat with the crowd, and just enjoy the rest of the night.

WHAT KIND OF PHOTO WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE TAKEN OF YOURSELF?

I’d love to do a photoshoot inspired by the movie “Poor Things”. The vibe and the clothes were incredible — it felt like the grooviest world imaginable!

Hooked? Then check out Suzan Köcher's recommendations:

I discovered our videographer, Paul Herbig, and his collective "Erste Grosse Freiheit". I came across his profile through another photographer and was instantly captivated by their work, which has a distinct indie movie vibe. I reached out right away to see if Paul was available to shoot two videos for us, and we were fortunate that he was. The video for our song "Seventeen" holds a special place in my heart, and we've just finished shooting another one with them for our upcoming single, "Living in a Bad Place." Stay tuned!
